The joy of landing an internship brings smiles, sometimes money and hopefully – jobs. However, many interns aren’t sure what to do when they start working. It does not matter if it is a news room, hospital or nonprofit.
The key is to shine. In the words of Ramonda (Mom from Black Panther) show them who you are.
- Show up on time. No one is going to wait for you to arrive. Get it in gear and get to work on time or even earlier to relax, set the tone of your day and help when needed. By coming early, you are showing that you are treating this like a full time job.
- Ask questions. We know….asking questions can get annoying after a while. However, when you ask thoughtful questions you are able to tap into what the person needs or wants.
- Try it all. Treat it like it is a back to school sale. Try on every item or in this case, try every element of the area you are in. Answer phones. Create reports. Work the camera. Attend meetings. Ask if they need new graphics. Go for the fun tasks as well as the tasks that aren’t as fabulous. TRY. IT. ALL.
